Biography
Shaun is a professor and joined the Centre in 2013 via a meandering path to health services research. He trained as a physicist and then did a bioengineering PhD involving lasers, blood and bits of skin. Then came health informatics, amputee rehabilitation and a move to Oslo, followed by eight years at the University of Dundee, three of which as Assistant Director of the Tayside Clinical Trials Unit. He also has a guest professor post in the Department of Women's and Children’s Health at Uppsala University, Sweden.
Shaun is active in the field of efficient trial design, particularly pragmatic trial design, improved recruitment and retention interventions for trials, the design of complex interventions and the effective presentation of research evidence. He led the development of the NIHR INCLUDE Ethnicity Framework (), a tool to help trialists design inclusive trials, PRO EDI (), a tool to help systematic reviewers consider equity in their reviews, and PRECIS-2 (), a tool to match trial design decisions to what the users of the results need, and the INFORM Structured Grant Form for Trials (), a new, evidence-based type of grant form for trials that is designed to improve the informativeness of funded trials.
He leads an initiative called Trial Forge () that aims to be more systematic about how we identify, generate and use research evidence in making trial design, conduct, analysis and reporting decisions.
