Title:
Perceived Discrimination and Refugee Integration
Abstract “Does believing that discrimination is widespread weaken immigrants' attachment to society? We address this question with observational and experimental evidence from a survey targeting all adult UNHCR refugees who have arrived in Norway since 1990. We find that those who perceive high discrimination report a weaker sense of belonging and less trust in Norwegians. We next randomize exposure to true but differently framed information about discrimination against people with foreign-sounding names. Refugees update their priors on the prevalence of societal discrimination, but effects on downstream attitudes are small. Equivalence tests show that we can rule out socially important effects. Public debate highlighting the extent of discrimination is therefore unlikely to weaken refugees' sense of belonging.”
All are welcome.
