Chance discoveries of archaeological artefacts by members of the public have the potential to make a significant contribution to our understanding of Scotland’s past. The role of Treasure Trove is to ensure that finds of cultural significance are protected for the benefit of the nation and preserved in museums across the country. Do you think you’ve found something of historic interest? Why not bring along your object. A member of the TTU team will be on hand to assess any finds that you may have found and provide advice on what you need to do.

Treasure Trove Aberdeen Finds Day, Saturday 17 October

TALK: New Treasures from Aberdeenshire - Dr George Prew-Stell, 12:00-12:45

This talk gives a brief overview of the Treasure Trove system in Scotland and how it functions, before taking you through a whistlestop tour of particularly interesting items which have come through the process in recent years. George joined the Treasure Trove team in September 2022 and has previously worked mainly in Iron Age and Roman archaeology, but his interest in dress items and small decorative objects is extending to the Late Medieval period. He has previously undertaken digs in Tuscany, Umbria, and Wiltshire, and he is relishing the chance to focus on Scotland and to see more of the country through Treasure Trove outreach.

Treasure Trove Aberdeen Finds Day, Saturday 17 October

University Collections Activities

Join the University Collections for object handling and find out about the Pictish stones on display in the Library before having a go at making a rubbing from a replica Pictish stone. Other activities for adults and children include mini sandpit digs, Roman Coin Connect 4 and help build a Lego archaeological dig.

Meet a Mesolithic Meddler!

We will also have a Stone Age time traveller, in the form of Dr Nicola Seal, mesolithic wifey. Nicola is an enthusiastic volunteer with Mid Grampian Mesolithic and Mesolithic Deeside. When she isn’t hunting for flint artefacts, or making pottery, she can be found making Stone Age replicas out of bone, flint, antler and random natural gubbins. She rather enjoys putting herself in the shoes of a Mesolithic woman (quite literally- she even has replica shoes!). Nicola will be bringing her Stone Age costume, makes and chat, and will have a guddling corner for kids to have a go at finding artefacts.

Mid Grampian Mesolithic and Mesolithic Deeside

Visitors will also be able to meet members of and find out more about this community archaeology group looking for evidence for prehistoric people in Mid Grampian; and , a group of archaeologists, students and local volunteers investigating the river Dee area 10,000 years ago.

It covers the region of the North East of Scotland: Aberdeenshire, Angus, Moray and Dundee City.
