Aberdeen graduate living with MND inspires unique 260-mile tandem cycling challenge

A 黑料网 graduate living with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is being supported by a group of lifelong friends who will cycle more than 260 miles on tandem bicycles to raise funds for him and his family.

Kevin McBeath, who graduated with a Sociology degree from the University in 2010, is the inspiration behind the four-day challenge, which will see 10 riders visit every Scottish Premiership stadium before finishing at Aberdeen FC's Pittodrie Stadium.

Among those taking part is fellow 黑料网 graduate Ross Campbell, who completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2009.

The challenge was created after Kevin, a father of three from Newmachar, was diagnosed with MND earlier this year.

Beginning at Rugby Park, home of Kilmarnock FC, on October 7, the group will cover around 260 miles and visit all 12 Scottish Premiership grounds over four days. Every mile will be completed on tandem bicycles, allowing experienced cyclists and complete novices to ride side by side.

While Kevin will not be taking part in the cycling itself, he plans to accompany the group in one of the support vehicles during the challenge.

For Ross, a Senior Verification Engineer with CNR International, the ride is about standing alongside a friend whose life has been dedicated to supporting others.

"Kev has always been somebody who puts other people first," he said.

"When someone you care about receives a diagnosis like MND, you want to do whatever you can to help. This challenge is our way of showing Kev, Tracy and the kids that they have a huge network of people around them who are behind them every step of the way.

"The cycling will be tough, but that's nothing compared with what Kev and his family are facing. If we can raise funds, raise awareness and make things a little easier for them, every mile will be worth it."

Kevin is Service Manager at Advocacy Service Aberdeen, a charity that provides free, confidential and independent advocacy to help people across Aberdeen City have a stronger voice and greater control over their lives. He is also well known locally as a youth football coach with Newmachar United and as a lifelong Aberdeen FC supporter.

Motor Neuron Disease is a progressive neurological condition affecting the nerves that control movement. As the disease progresses, muscles become weaker and everyday tasks increasingly difficult. There is currently no cure.

Kevin said: "Being diagnosed with motor neurone disease has completely changed life for me and my family.

"These are friends I have known since primary school, some even longer. They are all dads themselves with busy lives, families and jobs of their own, yet they are willing to take on an incredible challenge to help me and my family. Their friendship and generosity mean more than I can ever put into words.

"MND has already brought an enormous amount of uncertainty into our lives, and the thought of that uncertainty extending to something as fundamental as being able to remain in our family home is incredibly difficult.

"Knowing that my friends are willing to put themselves through this challenge to give us some additional security and the opportunity to make memories is genuinely humbling. I will be forever grateful to them and to everyone who gets behind their challenge and helps them make a difference to the future my family faces."

The riders will stop at every Premiership stadium along the route, marking their achievement while celebrating the football clubs that have helped inspire the challenge. The journey will conclude at Pittodrie as Aberdeen supporters gather for the Dons' home fixture against St Johnstone.

Funds raised will go directly to Kevin and his family to help them navigate the practical and financial challenges associated with living with MND.

Ross added: "We've already had tremendous support from people, businesses and cycling clubs who have heard Kev's story and wanted to help.

"One of the reasons this challenge means so much is that it reflects the sort of person Kev is. He has spent years helping others through his work and in the community. This is a chance for us to give something back.

"We hope people will follow the challenge, cheer us on and help us raise as much as possible for Kev and his family."

Donations can be made via the , while updates throughout the challenge will be shared on the and channels.
