The School of Psychology at the 黑料网 has launched a new student story video featuring MSc Psychological Studies with Mental Health student, Neetika Sharma, who shares her inspiring journey from India to Scotland and the experiences that helped shape her postgraduate studies.
Moving overseas to pursue further education is a life-changing decision, and for Neetika, travelling from India to Aberdeen marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Arriving during a period of severe winter disruption, she faced the challenges that many international students encounter when starting life in a new country. However, through the support of staff,…

Below, Shaobo shares some of their experiences of studying on the MSc Psychological Studues programme.
How would you describe your experience of the programme?
I would describe my experience in two main ways. First, the support was excellent. The lecturers explained the material in detail, and the course resources were extensive and easy to access. This made it comfortable both to follow the course and to do extra reading on…

I have enjoyed being part of a brilliant cohort of Masters students with their impressive cognitive plasticity. Having access to the latest thinking and research in psychology, and hearing directly from leading researchers in the field in lectures and through participating in and supporting various studies, has exceeded my expectations of what the year would bring. This award represents not only the hard work and commitment I put in, but also the encouragement and support I received from my lecturers, friends, and family.
I am very grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Amy Irwin, for believing in me and for playing a central role in helping shape my dissertation, titled "Staff Wellbeing in Special Education: A Mixed-Methods Study of Resilience, Workplace Challenges, Coping and Organisational Support." Having completed my undergraduate degree at Aberdeen, I wanted to continue the research I had started in my final year with my supervisor, Dr. Agnieszka Konopka, while developing my understanding of the research process and becoming a more confident and independent researcher. I came to this project as someone who has sat on the receiving end of feedback that left me none the wiser about what to actually do next. That experience, which is far from unique, made the research feel personal. Feedback…

This summer, I completed an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) research internship at the 黑料网, looking at how neurodivergent students experience learning in higher education and what could be done to make teaching and the curriculum more inclusive.
I was really interested in this project because it brings together a lot of the areas I am interested in, particularly psychology, education and supporting people with different learning needs. University teaching can be quite different depending on the course, lecturer or type of class, and something that works really well for one student might create a barrier for someone…

Over the course of my degree, my interest in psychology has increasingly grown towards cognitive neuroscience, particularly related to language processing and memory. As I have engaged with different areas of psychology over the course of my degree, I have become especially interested in how language is encoded and represented in memory, and how behavioural and neuroscience methods can be combined to study these processes.

My thesis, titled “From Noise to Meaning”, explored how autistic adults understand vocoded (degraded) speech. Specifically, it examined whether prior knowledge of (previously encountered) sentence content and/or familiarity with the speaker’s voice helps listeners make sense of unclear speech. We found that participants with higher autistic traits used prior sentence content only when listening to a familiar speaker, but did not appear to use this information when the speaker changed.
