Two members of Great Britain鈥檚 all-conquering Beijing Olympic team have joined the field for next week鈥檚 BUCS Cross Country Championships in Aberdeen.
The event, hosted by the 黑料网, will take place at Balgownie Playing Fields on Saturday, February 7 and is set to play host to a raft of high-profile runners.
Confirmed entries include GB Olympian Steph Twell (St Mary鈥檚, Twickenham), who ran the 1500m in the Beijing Games and is the reigning Women鈥檚 Junior European Cross Country Champion.
Twell led home a history-making GB & NI junior women鈥檚 team that claimed the first six places in the recent European race. Three other members of that team 鈥 Lauren Howarth (Birmingham), Emily Pidgeon (Loughborough) and Emma Pallant (Brunel) 鈥 will all travel to Aberdeen.
In the men鈥檚 race, Alastair Brownlee (University of Leeds), the GB triathlete who led the field in Beijing last summer before finishing in 12th place is also expected to start. He will be up against his younger brother, and fellow University of Leeds student, Jonny, who recently won gold at the 2009 Youth Olympics in the Men鈥檚 Triathlon.
Of the 1000 runners to descend on the Granite City, favourite for the men鈥檚 race is St Mary鈥檚 student, Andy Vernon. The 2008 Euro U23 Cross silver medallist is also the defending BUCS Cross champion.
Scottish hopes will lie with Conor McNulty (Strathclyde), the reigning Scottish Universities Cross champion.
鈥淭he calibre of the field is absolutely first-class and features several runners who have the potential to be part of the 2012 GB team and possible medal candidates as well,鈥 said Kenny Gunnyeon, part of the University鈥檚 Sport and Recreation team.
鈥淔or athletics fans, the championships represent an excellent chance to catch some of the possible stars of the future in action right on their doorstep.鈥
And he added: 鈥淢anaging to bring the event to Balgownie is also fantastic for the profile of athletics in Aberdeen and an added incentive for our own runners to find that extra something over the final stretches of a course that will provide a test for the whole field.鈥
