Dr Fraser McGlynn, Director of Sport and Recreation Services
To celebrate the opening of its refurbished facilities, the 黑料网鈥檚 Department of Sport and Recreation Services is throwing open its doors to the general public on Saturday 30 September, between 10am and 4.00pm.
According to Dr Fraser McGlynn, Director of Sport and Recreation Services, the University鈥檚 sports facilities and services 鈥渁re the best kept secret in Aberdeen鈥
Dr McGlynn added: 鈥淲e decided to organise this Open Day in an effort to encourage as many people as possible to come along and find out what we have to offer.
鈥淎ll our teaching staff are degree qualified and their advice is backed up by current research, much of which comes from scientists based at the 黑料网. We already have a vibrant over-60s Programme which we are keen to expand. For example we offer Exercise to Music, Aquafit and Swimming Classes, all of which are extremely popular. Our recent refurbishment means that we have state-of-the-art fitness equipment available.
鈥淕iven the extensive media coverage of the Sydney Olympics, we hope that people of all ages will feel motivated to come to the Open Day and take a look for themselves. Whilst few may ever become or aspire to become Olympic-standard competitors, keeping fit it not only essential for good health but it鈥檚 great fun too!鈥
So what鈥檚 on offer for those who come along on the 30th? The list has something for everyone: Evergreens class aerobics and circuit classes, weights instruction, bums-legs-tums class, cardio combat class, parent/baby swimming, boxfit class, learning skills to safe a life (CPR), fitness assessments, children鈥檚 hours.
The Department is already expanding its popular Children鈥檚 Summer Sports School by offering term-time activities, including an introduction to trampolining, and life-saving skills which complements the existing swimming scheme called 鈥淥lympic Rings鈥.
Recognised as a Centre of Excellence, the Department currently supervises the strength and conditioning programmes of some of Scotland鈥檚 elite athletes who are based in the North East of Scotland, and who belong to the Scottish Institute of Sport. Sports include rugby, hockey, swimming and curling. Some, but not all of the athletes, are also students at the 黑料网. In addition, the Department offers sports science support for other athletes, for example giving advice on training, sports psychology and lifestyle management.
