The staff at Whinhill medical practice are all absolutely lovely. Very welcoming and caring, they made me feel immediately like I was part of the team. Dr Michelle is an excellent tutor and always prioritised giving me as much teaching and opportunity to consult as possible even on busy duty days when she was the only doctor in the practice. She is an amazing doctor that I learned a lot from, and she frequently gave me feedback which I appreciated. Her induction was excellent and made me feel at home. Dr Porter made sure I felt comfortable during placement and really encouraged me to see patients independently boosting my confidence. I consulted with her many challenging patients, she still made opportunities for me to learn and consult independently and I learnt a lot by watching her navigate these consultations. I felt very comfortable with her as my supervisor and felt I could go to her with any issues. Fiona also really prioritised my learning allowing me to see patients independently, I enjoyed spending time with her and watching her consult. She went out of her way to book in patients for me she thought would help my learning which I massively appreciate and made a big difference to my placement experience. I had a great day with both Bob and Jo, getting to see the different relationship they have with patients and I appreciate how they were so willing to show me what they do and answer all of my questions. I didn’t spend as much time with Dr Iliya or Dr Clarke but both welcomed me into their clinics and answered my questions. The same goes for Stella and Suze who both made me feel instantly part of the team. The office/secretary/pharmacy/everyone else in the building staff also all treated me with respect and jumped of help me answer any questions or get anything else done I needed without hesitation which i appreciate and I enjoyed getting to know them at lunchtime also.

Overall I had an excellent time at Whinhill medical practice. As I stated above the staff are all lovely. I did find there to be a lack of communication that did cause me some stress while I was there for example I didn’t get my timetable until the end of my second week so I felt a bit lost. And I had two of my independent student surgeries cancelled without anyone telling me, on one occasion the doctor who was supposed to be supervising me wasn’t even in the building. I appreciate that the environment is super busy and stressful at the moment, however not being told when these changes were made did make me feel forgotten about. There was also an occasion where I was scheduled for a clinic but there was no room for me to consult in, I felt really award wander round while they tried to ask someone to sacrifice their room for me and felt that this could have been arranged in advance when they booked my patients in. It’s frustrating because I look forward to these clinics, and am disappointed when they get cancelled. I also had issues with it and didn’t have full access to the computer for more than a week, although lots of effort to fix this was made I feel like it could have been sorted before I arrived to make sure I was able to make the most of a 4 week placement. I did also find the patients that were booked into my surgery to be quite basic, fungal toenails URTI etc. Which is fine but do not need 45 minuet appointments. I have seen more complex patients at the teaching centre and with Drs in their own clinic so feel I could do so in my clinics. Otherwise if they are going to be more straightforward patients, shorter appointments would be better so I could see more of them. Although I will say dr Porter, dr Michelle and Fiona did let me see lots of patients independently off of their own lists which I found to be an incredibly valuable learning experience. And this meant I still got to see plenty of patients on my own due to their teaching. The final thing I will say is that even though I enjoyed my time with Suze and Stella I feel as a 5th year there is no point in me watching someone else take bloods or them watching me take bloods. I am very confident with this by now. Asthma/BP/diabetes reviews are things that I feel I can still take away learning from.
