I would like to nominate Dr Jillian MacFarlane, GP at Ellon Medical Practice, for the teaching, support and encouragement she gave me throughout my placement. Dr MacFarlane did so much to help me develop my consultation skills, improve my differential diagnoses and gain confidence. She was really good at giving feedback, and I always felt that she was really paying attention to my consultations and looking for ways to help me improve and highlight things I was already doing well. She was able to identify specific areas for improvement and explain them in a way that was constructive, supportive and easy to learn from. I felt she was invested in my learning and improvement. She was always warm, welcoming and approachable, even when she had a particularly busy list. I felt that she genuinely wanted me to improve and succeed, and her support made a real difference to me. Although I have done well in placement assessments and exams, I feel that she helped me see myself as a future doctor for the first time and believe that I could be good at it. I have sometimes struggled with confidence, and it's been said I am under confident at times. I feel that she has helped me develop a level of self-confidence in medicine that I hadn't really had before. I felt I took this confidence on to the teaching centre and into psychiatry. I am very grateful for the teaching and confidence she gave me. She really made a difference to me.

I have only positive things to say about this placement. The whole team were so welcoming, supportive and encouraging, and I felt that I was genuinely given the opportunity to develop my consultation skills and confidence. I learned a alot about different consultation styles through observation and received constructive feedback during supervised consultations. I feel I gained the most through the tandem clinics. I remember my first tandem consultation, which was for a simple ear infection but how much of a step up it felt. It made me realise how much I still had to learn, but I felt really supported to identify areas for improvement and develop my skills. Dr MacFarlane was particularly supportive and really helped me gain confidence at this time. I really enjoyed the tandem clinics and seeing such a wide range of age groups and conditions. I felt encouraged to make the most of learning opportunities, and if something unusual was happening in the practice while I was timetabled for something else, the team were flexible and encouraged me to go along. So for example Dr Ewen had an interesting patient while I was being supervised by another GP and kindly both GPs were happy for me to see the patient with Dr Ewen. I always felt that I was being encouraged and given the opportunity to consult, learn and improve. I also really appreciated how welcomed I felt in the practice, I was included at coffee break and treated like part of the team despite only being there for 4 weeks. I really enjoyed going on home visits with the nursing team. Annie was especially supportive in allowing me to carry out supervised assessments and talk through differential diagnoses and potential management plans. I learned a great deal from her about adapting to different settings, particularly when in patient's own homes, where the environment is less controlled and circumstance can vary a lot. Overall, I felt very well supported and encouraged throughout the placement. Its a lovely practice and I am really grateful for the experience - thank you.
