Hard to pick one as it has been such a great block overall! But the highlight for me was the 'on call simulation'. I thought it was the best simulation I had done, the best learning experience to prepare us for FY1 and it was the right amount of challenging. it was also so good to see how involved the staff were in our learning.
Connecting with the nurse educators, ANPs , fy1s and other members of the team have been a huge highlight. Being independent but still supported. The on call session was really good. Having some examples of before hand, would help create an understanding and would help take away the confusion. I found of the first few cases and allow us to gain more experience. After u settled into the role I really enjoyed the activity. I developed my SBAR skills over the phone.
The entire team has been absolutely fantastic! I have felt very supported and have been encouraged to do a lot of different clinical activities! All staff were very welcoming and found time to teach or help even on very busy shifts. I truly felt a part of the team and would love to work as an FY1 someday at Dr.Grays!

What has been the main challenge during this block?

Didnt have many challenges to be honest - I feel like we could have done with more teaching sessions but that's all
Teaching sessions were good but I felt pressured to go to the medicine teaching. Although Dr Stone is a very good teacher. The learning technique, needing to preform in front of other students is not a good learning environment for me. Having these sessions as non mandatory allowed me to go and find learning opportunities which would allow me to excel in different environment. I had students come to me and say that she was annoyed that I had not been going to the non mandatory sessions which made me feel uncomfortable. Again she is a very good teaching but I have different learning requirements and need a comfortable space to make mistakes and learn from them. Dr Williams again had good teaching sessions but they were quite long. Developing A to E sessions is great but I found the lectures could be more compact. For example we went over art and perception which was really good learning but after the 4th peace of art it felt repetitive and hard to concentrate. Compacting and shortening these lectures after the a to e wouldn’t sacrifice learning but rather would keep focus and keep up our active learning.

Dale and Tracy have been a huge support during this block. They had made me feel welcomed and apart of the team. Si Ying, Sophie and Ellie were great teachers and taught us a lot about; referrals, DNACPRs, prescribing, especially gentomycin.
All staff named below work at Dr.Grays Hospital in Elgin. Each of them took time during my shifts with them to explain, teach and make me feel a part of the team. Easily my favourite placement block so far (including year 4) Thank you so much to all of you who made this block so great. The teaching was great, organisation was perfect and I felt supported throughout. Feel sad about going back to Aberdeen but I'm very lucky to have been placed up in Elgin with great staff in a great teaching environment. I know future students will feel the same. One thing that could be better is more teaching sessions throughout the week but not a huge issue!
