You build up a relationship with the staff so you know who to go to if there are any concerns.
Sitting down with the block lead- Jan specifically learnt all our names and it felt like she got to know us and made us feel welcome.

Positive
Got to see some patients independently but would say the triage in 9b was best for this, encouraging medical students to see the patients first is good.
As this block contains different specialties, please make it clear in your comments which specialty you are referring to. Please note any particularly good educational experiences and state why:

Paeds - Jans ‘brain gym’ on fridays was good for learning about cases we may not have seen in hospital Repro - tutorials were useful to apply knowledge on wards
The teaching sessions - tutorials were very good in paediatrics Dr Jan was very good and I got a lot from the sessions, in Paeds too Dr Teddy provided excellent teaching at the right level and a good learning environment. The tutorials by Dr Tracey Sturgeon were also very good, things we had already covered in lecture material but had probably forgotten so was a good recap. Sim session were very useful too, the teaching fellows did an excellent job, more would be useful but understand these are time consuming to organise.
Please suggest any improvements to this educational experience.

Don’t schedule them in the morning.
timetable the peads teaching sessions for longer as they often went over. Being new to Raigmore hospital was very overwhelming so I found having both paeds and obs&gynae introductions back to back a lot. there was so much information to take in and being completely new in a hospital it made it challenging to feel comfortable. I feel like it would be very beneficial to have separate inductions- one at the start of obs/ynae and one at the start of paeds.
Would you like to tell us more about the concern related to discrimination, bullying and harassment?

During the Obstetric Haemorrhaging tutorial with Dr Fernandes, one of the student's (Caroline Gardiner) behaviour was incredibly concerning. During discussion of a patient with a haemoglobin of 60, the student exclaimed "a BMI of 60? How is that even possible?" before remarking "Imagine doing a C section on that" and then continued to make disturbing gestures of digging/swimming, implying that you would have to use such measures during a C section of a patient with that body mass index. Throughout the tutorial her behaviour was disturbing and unacceptable. Before the tutorial started, she arrived 10 minutes late and then stood up before the group and stated "Class is cancelled guys" which confused several students. It is concerning that this unprofessional behaviour went unchecked throughout the block.
Please comment on the quality of tutorials across this block. Please identify any specific tutorials which you would like to highlight for positive feedback or for improvement.

Dr Sharkey was quite disheartening during her tutorial. If you suggested something that was wrong she snaps at you and dismisses your suggestion, then if no one talks she gets nippy that we don’t care. Not sure how that poses a positive learning environment. This meant us students all tried to avoid her clinics. Dr Rashmi was very rude to me when on placement. Felt like I couldn’t do anything right (and I’m not useless, I promise), made me feel so rubbish that I just left placement early because I wasn’t letting myself get treated like that. Other than those two negative experiences, I really enjoyed the rest of the block!

Dr Janaki Vedarajan Paeds in Raigmore She genuinely cares about her students. She takes time to listen to feedback and shows that she actually wants you to learn in a positive and happy environment.
Dr Natalie Cameron, Obs&Gynae reg in Raigmore. Natalie was so welcoming to me and all of the other medical students, she went out her way to get us involved and allowing us to scrub in and actually learn our names which is very rare for the doctors to do! She was an absolutely amazing doctor/ surgeon too, someone I will look up to for a long time.
