A fantastic placement! Consultants are very approachable, always happy to have an extended discussion about patients, treatments and concepts in psychiatry. Nurse practitioners readily allow students to lead clerking in liaison psychiatry. CPNs took us on home visits and gave us a holistic view of the patients. Would really recommend doing psychiatry in Elgin to junior students!

Was able to practice taking histories on the ward and also do shorter reviews independently with them in between ward rounds. Was able to jointly clerk liaison psychiatry patients under supervision from nurse practitioners.

Perhaps have a few timetabled sessions. Would suggest maybe 2 scheduled activities (e.g. clinics) a week and let students organise other activities such as CPN home visits, liaison psychiatry and others around. (hybrid system between flexibility and timetable). Timetabling everything would make the block too rigid (I enjoyed the flexibility).
Would you like to tell us more about the concern related to discrimination, bullying and harassment?

Dr Thomas Mcphee (consultant psychiatrist) - Pluscarden Clinic, Dr Gray's hospital - always ready to answer questions and explain concepts, made me feel a part of the team. Dr Fiona Cowie (ST5 psychiatry) - Pluscarden Clinic, Dr Gray's hospital - Actively sought opportunities for us and did teaching as well. Very approachable and helped me navigate the department when I was new to the place. Susan Mainland and Patricia Clark (CPNs) - Pluscarden Clinic, Dr Gray's hospital - willingly took me on home visits and explained the background of their patients in detail. Lynsey, Kate, Victoria, Fiona (liaison psychiatry nurse practitioners) - Pluscarden Clinic, Dr Gray's hospital - willingly took me to assess patients. On several occasions, let me do part of the clerking under their supervision - more useful than learning passively.
