Willingness of the team to teach.
I did not feel welcome and was generally treated badly
The introduction to the orthopaedic ward was really useful. Staff were all really friendly.
All the staff that I shadowed/worked with were very nice and friendly
The team on 215 vascular surgery were very personable and you never felt like you were an inconvenience. All grades of doctors were very willing to teach and help with sign offs.
FY doctors on neurosurgery ward were very helpful and welcoming. Did good teaching as well. The registrars were really helpful with CBDs and mini Cexs. Overall really enjoyed coming into the ward.
Induction on first day.

Very little - only with practical procedures
I did lots of post-op assessments, A-E assessments and clerking of patients. I was supervised appropriately when doing so.
We were part of ward rounds almost everyday and got good opportunities to follow the perioperative patient journey
was able to see patients and interact with them. Nurses were helpful in helping find patients
Good patient exposure, especially to do post operative reviews.

Orthopaedics
General surgery purple team
Vascular surgery, very friendly and welcoming team. Keen to teach and happy to have us.
The phlebotomy session at Woodend was really helpful and I felt supported throughout the morning. The outpatient clinics at Woodend were really useful for learning and consolidating previous teaching.
Spending time in theatre with the surgeons and anaesthetists, it helps follow the whole patient's journey from the ward to being anaesthetised to performing the surgery to recovery
Mr Bashir orthopaedic registrar was an excellent teacher in fracture clinic The whole team on ward 215 were excellent 208 surgical receiving were very welcoming
Orthopaedics

Please suggest any improvements to this educational experience.

Having CBD sign offs restricted to ST3 and above severely limits opportunities to do meaningful CBDs. ST3 and above are just too busy and in my experience this unfortunately reduces it to a simple box-ticking exercise. Open this up to more grades and allow the space for a decent CBD. This is not anyone's fault on the ward or any ST's fault, just the demands placed on them and an oversubscribed medical cohort are not compatible. Otherwise great placement 10/10
There needs to be more involvement from the educational supervisor, or a ST/FY doctor should be directly involved in the supervision of students. There are too many students and everyone ignores them unless they are a fifth year.
Very difficult to get CBDs because registrars are so busy. Most would agree and were happy to do it but then would be called away.
More time in theatre, I felt like my time on the ward was much more than my time in theatre. I think more time in theatre would be beneficial

Mr Mostafa Beshr - Ortho - Excellent reg and keen to teach Mr Timothy Dougall - Ortho - Absolute gentleman and incredibly approachable consultant Mr Iain Stevenson - Ortho - As above and fantastic teaching Mr Godsfavour Maduka - Ortho - Another excellent reg and also keen to teach
Mr. James Milburn and Mr. Ahmed Salih. They are both consultants in the yellow team general surgery unit. They explain complex medical concepts in a simplified way. How they explain and communicate heart breaking diagnosis to patients in a direct yet calm and comfortable way really stood out. They make it look so effortless but it is a result of their experience over the years. Amazing.
Mr Abdelwakeel Bakhiet Works as an orthopaedic ST5 registrar in ARI He was very nice to me, invited me to join him in theatre multiple times, talked me through how to improve my portfolio to maximise my chances of acceptance into my desired speciality, treated me as a friend and colleague.
There was a FY1 called Eildh she was very helpful and kind.
