Elphinstone Institute Public Lecture Series
Annie Shirer (1873–1915) of Kininmonth collected 260 songs for Gavin Greig and was the third most prolific contributor to the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection, the famous collection of traditional songs in the North-East of Scotland. She also collected rhymes, proverbs and riddles, many in her native Doric, some of which were published by the Rymour Club in Edinburgh. A recent project, Fan the Loons an Lassikies Cam Oot Tae Play – Auld Intae New, grew from a conversation with Ewan McVicar, who introduced the speaker, Pauline Cordiner, to the work of Annie Shirer. The project explored Shirer's collection of rhymes, and Pauline visited local schools, encouraging pupils to create their own rhymes and illustrations inspired by Annie’s originals.
Pauline Cordiner is a storyteller from the fishing and farming traditions of the North-East of Scotland and enjoys telling a variety of traditional Scottish tales, often based on in-depth research she has conducted into local history. Since 2001 she has been involved in many storytelling events and projects which have allowed her to build on her enthusiasm for science, history, and the environment.
